Week of 3/23/20 - Topic: Managing Emotions - This week we will focus on skills and activities to help students manage their emotions. These are uncertain times. Due to present circumstances, families and, especially, siblings are in close quarters for long periods of time can cause emotions can run high. Here are some tips and activities that can help students manage their emotions!
The Steps for Calming Down! Here are the steps we practice regularly during our classroom Second Step lessons to calm down. Students know how to stop, name your feeling, calm down (use a tool to get calm)!
Start Each Day in a Mindful Way! Mindful Mood (Feeling) activity.
You will need paper and makers, colored pencils, gel pens, or crayons.
Our moods often affect the way we act. If you are happy, you might act kind or generous. If you're grumpy, you might act mean or selfish. It is wise understand our moods and how they affect what we say or do.
Step 1: Each morning, sit quietly (mindfully) with your back straight and body relaxed. Take three deep belly breaths. Notice your feelings.
Where do you feel your feelings? Put your hand there. Does it feel heavy like clay or light as a feather?
Step 2: Now, choose a maker or crayon to draw your feelings. Blue could mean one feeling. Red or green could mean another. You choose.
Step 3: Keep your mood drawing where you can see it again. This can help remind you how you have been feeling. Later you might have a different feeling, create a new drawing and let the old feeling go.
By paying attention to your feelings in the morning, you can change how you act throughout the day!
